One Fen Court, in the eastern district of the City of London, offers modern office space, shops and a 14th-floor restaurant, as well as one of London’s largest rooftop gardens.

Designed in three distinct sections, the iconic building has a two-storey base that incorporates a new public passageway lined with shopfronts. Nine storeys of offices are then topped with a full glazed ‘crown’, providing four more floors of offices as well as the restaurant.

The project

The concept

The upper floors of the glazed façade are set back from the main building and, striped with bands of dichroic glass, constantly change colour as you move around the site. This effect is complemented by the geometries of the main façade, crafted from terracotta and glass to present a crystalline appearance that changes in response to daylight and weather conditions.

What did we do?

We designed, engineered, manufactured and installed an overall area of 18,000 sqm of Closed Cavity Façade (CCF), steel mullion transom façade, large volume terracotta panels and sunscreen louvres. This was the first time dichroic glass had been used with the inclined and bent CCF. For the 10m high steel mullion transom façade at ground level, we used precast concrete-clad pillars.
