This vibrant centre for heritage and arts follows the transformation of Hong Kong’s former Central Police Station, Central Magistracy, and Victoria Prison.

Representing Hong Kong’s largest conservation project, Tai Kwun has been recognised with RIBA International and UNESCO Asia-Pacific awards. As well as preserving 16 historic buildings, the transformation added two new buildings to the site, providing space for exhibitions and performing arts. The new blocks rise above the historic boundary walls, reinforcing the site’s dual identity as a cultural landmark and heritage asset.

The project

The concept

The façades for the two new buildings drew inspiration from the site’s original architecture.  A bespoke aluminium brick façade was designed for each structure, made from 100% recycled vehicle wheels from Australia. To achieve the desired effect, the bricks were finished with ECOstainless steel, in coordination with the design architect.

What did we do?

We designed and installed 8,310 sqm of unitised façade with aluminium castings, a 266 sqm glass façade, 250 sqm of aluminium cladding and 1,635 sqm of cladding with special 3D ceiling panels. We also installed fire-rated windows and balustrades with mobile platforms for the roof area.
