The Concept

Education City, a new development area at the borders of the city of Doha, is being provided with a state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly local public transportation system. The People Mover System is a network of trams that connects the various facilities within Education City keeping all private vehicles for students, staff and faculty members parked in designated spots.

The project features the design & engineering, manufacture, supply and installation of the tram stop superstructures (17 stations) consisting of columns, rope nets and glazing, plus 34 waiting rooms for which Permasteelisa has looked after the steel construction, glazing and benches. Floor space dimensions of the canopy systems are 40.8 m x 17 m (134 x 56 ft) for eight stations and 40.8 m x 13.8 m (134 x 45 ft) for the remaining nine stations. Edge cables consist of fully locked stainless steel cables and the cable net is made of open strand stainless steel spiral cables. The glass canopies are made of triple laminated safety glass with a hydrophobic coating on the upper surface and tinted and acid etched glass at the underside that scatter the light and create special effects. Screen printing provides sun shade and glare protection to the passengers. The pantographs charging the trams are fixed under the translucent glass canopies with sun protection system. The two-layer concave and convex cable net system is pre-tensioned by tension rods and compression struts. Extremely tight installation tolerances had to be achieved to enable permanent contact between train pantographs and conductor rails fixed to the canopies. The walls of the 34 tram waiting rooms are fully glazed, with access via two double-leaf sliding doors. The steel roof is supported by eight round columns. Acoustic comfort for commuters is provided by a glass fibre-reinforced plaster ceiling of the underside of the roof.
