The Concept

LaGuardia Airport, which opened in 1939, is located between the Grand Central Parkway and the East River in the Queens district. Since 2016, the complete redevelopment of the hub, which is mainly used for domestic flights, has been carried out during ongoing operation of the airport.

Opened to the public in June 2020, the central building of the Terminal B - the four-story Headhouse - provides access to other parts of the building, such as the Central Hall or the West Garage. The main entrance for passengers at Terminal B is located in the Headhouse part facing the highway. The approx. 4,792 sqm (51,600 sq ft) filigree cable-wall directs natural light into the 18 m (59 ft) high check-in hall and a further 640 sqm (6,700 sq ft) of clerestoreys provide additional daylight. LaGuardia Terminal B is LEED Gold®.

The Project
Scope of Work

Design & engineering, manufacturing and installation of ten different types of façade for a total area of 24,200 sqm (260,500 sq ft) of façade. 5,845 glass façade units and metal panels, 17 entrance areas and almost 5,000 meters (16,400 ft) of steel cables.

The north façade of the Headhouse features a curtain wall mounted on a stick-system steel structure. The southern façades of the Headhouse (976 units) and the Central Hall (around 500 units) were constructed as cable walls with glass fixed to the cable wall with frames. The cables were tested for suitability, load-bearing capacity and continuous load behavior at the material testing institute of the renowned Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

The gates of LaGuardia´s Terminal B are connected to the Headhouse by two pedestrian bridges. With a length of 120 m (394 ft) and a height of approx. 20 m (66 ft), the Bridge B features 2,692 sqm (29,000 sq ft) of curtain wall. On their way to the West Garage, a 1,492 sqm (16,100 sq ft) stick-system façade made of steel profiles protects travellers from the weather.
